EltaMD UV Clear vs La Roche-Posay Anthelios: which to buy
EltaMD UV Clear is a zinc-based hybrid with niacinamide; Anthelios is a family of fluids. Here is which one suits your skin and why.
Short answer: Buy EltaMD UV Clear SPF 46 if your skin is breakout-prone or reactive and you want a light, fragrance-free daily lotion with niacinamide in it. Buy a La Roche-Posay Anthelios fluid if you want a higher labelled SPF, a matte finish, water resistance for sweaty days, or no octinoxate. Neither of the popular versions is a mineral-only sunscreen.
What you are actually comparing
This is not quite a like-for-like match. EltaMD UV Clear is one formula, sold untinted and in a few tinted versions. Anthelios is a whole line, and the three face products people usually mean behave very differently from each other.

The SPF numbers above are for the versions sold under US labelling. Sunscreen filters are regulated differently by region, so an Anthelios tube sold in Europe can use different filters and carry a different number from the one on a US shelf. A glowing review of "Anthelios" may be describing a product you cannot buy where you live.
EltaMD UV Clear: the case for it
UV Clear pairs 9% zinc oxide with 7.5% octinoxate, which makes it a hybrid rather than a mineral sunscreen, whatever the internet calls it. The zinc does most of the UVA work; the octinoxate adds UVB protection without needing so much zinc that the lotion turns chalky.
The reason it has a following among people with breakouts is the rest of the bottle. EltaMD lists it as oil-free, fragrance-free, paraben-free and non-comedogenic, and it carries 5% niacinamide, which the brand says helps reduce the appearance of blemishes and discoloration. That is a cosmetic claim, not a treatment one, but a sunscreen that feels like a light moisturizer is one people actually wear every morning, and that matters more than the label number. Niacinamide for oily skin explains what that ingredient can and cannot do.

EltaMD UV Clear Broad-Spectrum SPF 46
Zinc oxide plus octinoxate with 5% niacinamide in an oil-free, non-comedogenic lotion. The brand says the untinted version works best on fair to medium skin tones; a Deep Tinted version exists for deeper skin.
The honest downsides. The untinted version can show on deeper skin, and EltaMD itself says it works best on fair to medium tones. Octinoxate is one of the filters the FDA has proposed needs more safety data before it can be classed as generally recognized as safe and effective. That is a request for data, not a finding of harm, but some people prefer to avoid it while the question is open. And it sits in the Premium tier for a fairly small tube.
La Roche-Posay Anthelios: the case for it
Ultra Light Fluid SPF 60 is the everyday pick. It is a chemical-filter fluid with a matte finish, water resistant for 80 minutes, free of oxybenzone and octinoxate, and tested by the brand for tolerance on sensitive skin. Because there is no white pigment in the filters, it tends to disappear on most skin tones.
Oil-Free Clear Skin SPF 60 is the version for oily and acne-prone skin. It uses the same four filter types, adds perlite and silica to soak up oil, and is labelled non-comedogenic. If midday shine is what makes you skip reapplying, this is the one to try.
La Roche-Posay Anthelios Oil-Free Clear Skin Sunscreen SPF 60
A chemical-filter SPF 60 with oil-absorbing perlite and silica, labelled non-comedogenic and water resistant for 80 minutes. No octinoxate, no white pigment.
Mineral Tinted is the option if you want mineral filters only. The original Tinted shade relies on titanium dioxide; the Medium, Medium-Deep and Deep shades add zinc oxide. Zinc oxide vs titanium dioxide explains why that difference matters for UVA coverage.
The honest downsides. Chemical-filter fluids can sting if they migrate into the eyes, especially on sweaty days, and the dry-touch finish of Clear Skin can feel tight on skin that is dry rather than oily.
Head to head
For acne-prone skin
Both brands make a credible option, so pick by texture. UV Clear is the gentler, more moisturizing feel; Anthelios Clear Skin is the more mattifying one. Our best sunscreens for acne-prone skin compares them with three other picks.
For oily skin
Anthelios Clear Skin wins on shine control. UV Clear is oil-free but not mattifying, so very oily skin may still look slick by lunchtime. Best sunscreens for oily skin covers the texture question in more depth.
For sensitive skin
UV Clear, narrowly. Its zinc-heavy base and fragrance-free label suit reactive skin, and the American Academy of Dermatology notes that dermatologists recommend mineral filters for sensitive skin. If you want to go fully mineral, the Anthelios Mineral Tinted is the cleaner choice. Chemical vs mineral sunscreen walks through the trade-off.
For deeper skin tones
Anthelios Ultra Light Fluid or Clear Skin, or the EltaMD Deep Tinted rather than the untinted UV Clear. Best sunscreens with no white cast has the full shortlist.
For sweat, sport and outdoor days
Anthelios. Both SPF 60 fluids are labelled water resistant for 80 minutes, and a stated water-resistance claim is what you want when you are sweating.
Frequently asked questions
Is EltaMD UV Clear a mineral sunscreen?
No. It contains 9% zinc oxide, which is a mineral filter, but also 7.5% octinoxate, which is a chemical filter. That makes it a hybrid. If you specifically want mineral-only, EltaMD sells separate mineral formulas.
Is La Roche-Posay Anthelios better than EltaMD?
Neither is better across the board. Anthelios fluids give you a higher labelled SPF, water resistance and a matte finish for less money; UV Clear gives you a gentler feel, niacinamide and zinc oxide in a fragrance-free base. Choose by skin type and texture preference.
Does EltaMD UV Clear leave a white cast?
It can on deeper skin. EltaMD says the untinted version works best on fair to medium skin tones and sells a Deep Tinted version designed for deeper skin. Chemical-filter Anthelios fluids have no white pigment, so they usually avoid the problem.
Why is Anthelios different in Europe?
Sunscreen filters are approved differently by region, and several filters common in European formulas have not been available under US rules. The result is that products sharing a name can contain different filters and carry different SPF numbers. Check the active ingredients on the box you are actually buying.
Is SPF 60 much better than SPF 46?
Less than the numbers suggest. Both are well above the SPF 30 minimum dermatologists recommend, and the gap is smaller than the difference made by how much you apply and how often you reapply. SPF 30 vs SPF 50 explains why.
