Neutrogena vs La Roche-Posay: Which Brand to Buy

La Roche-Posay builds fragrance-free basics for sensitive skin; Neutrogena does oil control and gel textures. The exact products to buy from each.

Short answer: La Roche-Posay is the better brand for sensitive, dry or easily irritated skin: its Toleriane cleansers and Double Repair moisturizer are fragrance-free barrier basics. Neutrogena wins for oily, breakout-prone skin on a tighter budget, with a fragrance-free 2% salicylic acid wash and light gel moisturizers. For sunscreen, both make lightweight face options; choose by finish.

The short version

These two brands sit next to each other on the shelf and get compared constantly, but they are built for different people.

La Roche-Posay is a sensitive-skin brand first. Almost every face product in its Toleriane line is fragrance-free and built around the same three ingredients: ceramide-3, niacinamide and glycerin. It also has a serious acne line (Effaclar) and one of the widest sunscreen ranges in the drugstore.

Neutrogena is an oily-skin and acne brand first. Its strengths are salicylic acid washes, weightless gel moisturizers and lightweight chemical sunscreens. The catch is that many of its products come in scented and unscented versions that look almost identical, and names change often.

Pick La Roche-Posay if comfort is the problem. Pick Neutrogena if shine and clogged pores are the problem.

Which one for which skin

Oily or acne-prone: Neutrogena for the basics, La Roche-Posay for the treatment step. The Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Wash, Fragrance Free is a straightforward 2% salicylic acid wash, and the Hydro Boost Hyaluronic Acid Water Gel is about as light as a moisturizer gets. If you want benzoyl peroxide, La Roche-Posay sells Effaclar BPO Multi-Target Acne Treatment at 5.5% - and note that the old Effaclar Duo has been discontinued and replaced by it. Salicylic acid vs benzoyl peroxide explains which active suits which kind of breakout.

Dry or sensitive: La Roche-Posay, clearly. The Toleriane Hydrating Gentle Facial Cleanser and Toleriane Double Repair Face Moisturizer are both fragrance-free and built for skin that stings. Neutrogena does make a fragrance-free option here, the Hydro Boost Hyaluronic Acid Gel Cream Fragrance Free for normal to dry skin, but it is a hydration product rather than a barrier one.

Combination: split it. A La Roche-Posay cleanser with a Neutrogena gel moisturizer is a perfectly sensible routine.

Aging concerns: Neutrogena has the easier entry point - the Rapid Wrinkle Repair Retinol Night Moisturizer pairs retinol with hyaluronic acid in one step. If you are new to retinoids, read retinol for beginners first.

The products to buy from Neutrogena

  • Cleanser (breakouts): Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Wash, Fragrance Free - 2% salicylic acid, rinse-off.
  • Moisturizer (oily): Neutrogena Hydro Boost Hyaluronic Acid Water Gel - for normal to oily skin, and it contains fragrance.

  • Sunscreen: Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Invisible Gel Face Sunscreen SPF 40 - a clear, fragrance-free gel with a matte finish and chemical filters.
  • Treatment: Neutrogena Rapid Wrinkle Repair Retinol Night Moisturizer.

Best for oily, breakout-prone skin that wants a salicylic acid wash without added scent

Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Wash, Fragrance Free

BudgetDrugstore

A rinse-off 2% salicylic acid cleanser in the fragrance-free version. Short contact time makes it a gentle way to add an acid, and it is the clearest case where Neutrogena beats La Roche-Posay on simplicity.

The products to buy from La Roche-Posay

  • Cleanser (dry or sensitive): La Roche-Posay Toleriane Hydrating Gentle Facial Cleanser - ceramide-3 and niacinamide, fragrance-free.
  • Cleanser (oily): La Roche-Posay Toleriane Purifying Foaming Facial Cleanser - the same backbone in a foaming wash for normal to oily skin.
  • Cleanser (breakouts): La Roche-Posay Effaclar Medicated Gel Cleanser - 2% salicylic acid plus LHA.
  • Moisturizer: La Roche-Posay Toleriane Double Repair Face Moisturizer, or the Toleriane Double Repair Matte Face Moisturizer if you are oily.
  • Sunscreen: La Roche-Posay Anthelios Clear Skin Oil-Free Sunscreen SPF 60 - non-comedogenic, with oil-absorbing powders for a less shiny finish.
  • Treatment: La Roche-Posay Effaclar BPO Multi-Target Acne Treatment.
Best for sensitive, dry or easily irritated skin of any type

La Roche-Posay Toleriane Double Repair Face Moisturizer

MidDrugstore

Ceramide-3, niacinamide and glycerin in an oil-free, fragrance-free lightweight cream. Nothing in it is there for scent or sensation, which is why it is the safer default moisturizer of the two brands.

Where each brand trips people up

Neutrogena: versions. The fragrance-free Hydro Boost is not the Water Gel any more, and some cleansers have been retired while near-identical ones stay. Read the front label for the words "Fragrance Free" rather than trusting the line name.

La Roche-Posay: names that outlive products. Effaclar Duo is still recommended all over the internet, but La Roche-Posay has discontinued it. The benzoyl peroxide product to look for now is Effaclar BPO. If you are weighing it against another pharmacy brand, our CeraVe vs La Roche-Posay and La Roche-Posay vs Avene comparisons cover the rest of the range.

Frequently asked questions

Is La Roche-Posay better than Neutrogena?

For sensitive and dry skin, generally yes, because its face range is built around fragrance-free barrier ingredients. For oily skin on a budget, Neutrogena is often the better buy. Neither brand is better across the board.

Is Neutrogena Hydro Boost fragrance-free?

Not the Water Gel - Neutrogena lists it with its signature fragrance. The fragrance-free Hydro Boost is currently sold as the Hydro Boost Hyaluronic Acid Gel Cream Fragrance Free, which is aimed at normal to dry skin.

What replaced Effaclar Duo?

La Roche-Posay lists Effaclar Duo as discontinued and points to Effaclar BPO Multi-Target Acne Treatment, sold with 5.5% micronized benzoyl peroxide. If you used Duo, compare the labels before assuming the new one behaves the same.

Can I use Neutrogena and La Roche-Posay together?

Yes. There is nothing in either brand that clashes with the other. A common split is a La Roche-Posay cleanser and moisturizer with a Neutrogena gel sunscreen. Just avoid stacking several exfoliating acids at once.

Which brand has the better sunscreen for oily skin?

Both are strong. Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Invisible Gel SPF 40 dries to a matte, primer-like finish; La Roche-Posay Anthelios Clear Skin SPF 60 is oil-free with powders to absorb shine. Our best sunscreens for oily skin ranks the wider field.
