CeraVe PM vs La Roche-Posay Toleriane Double Repair
Two ceramide and niacinamide barrier moisturizers that look almost identical. The real differences: texture, humectant, and which skin each suits.
Short answer: These are two of the closest rivals in barrier care: both pair ceramides with niacinamide, and both are oil-free and fragrance-free. CeraVe PM Facial Moisturizing Lotion is the lighter lotion with three ceramides and hyaluronic acid. La Roche-Posay Toleriane Double Repair is a slightly creamier formula with glycerin and thermal water. Oily skin leans CeraVe; drier, sensitive skin leans La Roche-Posay.
The short version
If you have read the ingredient lists and thought these two look almost the same, you are right. Both are built on the same idea: ceramides to support the skin barrier, niacinamide as a soothing, supporting ingredient, a humectant to hold water, and nothing that tends to aggravate reactive skin, such as added fragrance.
The meaningful differences are texture, which humectant each one leans on, and what else each brand sells around it. Neither is a stronger barrier treatment than the other in any way that has been shown head to head. For the broader brand comparison, see CeraVe vs La Roche-Posay; this page is only about these two moisturizers.

The formulas: what is actually different
Ceramides: three vs one
CeraVe makes a point of using three ceramides. La Roche-Posay uses ceramide-3, which is the same molecule ingredient lists also call ceramide NP. More ceramide types sounds better, but there is no good evidence that the count alone decides how well a moisturizer supports your barrier. The rest of the formula, and whether you like it enough to use it every day, matters more. Ceramides for beginners explains what they actually do.
Humectants and extras
CeraVe leans on hyaluronic acid and wraps the formula in its MVE technology, which the brand says releases ingredients gradually for longer hydration. La Roche-Posay leans on glycerin, one of the most reliable humectants there is, plus its prebiotic thermal water, which the brand uses across its sensitive-skin ranges as a soothing base.
La Roche-Posay also makes two specific claims for this moisturizer: that it helps repair the skin barrier after one hour, and that it provides up to 48 hours of hydration. Those are the brand's own clinical claims rather than independent results, but they are more specific than anything CeraVe states for the PM lotion.
Texture
This is the difference you will notice first. The CeraVe PM lotion is very light and sinks in fast. Toleriane Double Repair is still light, but it is a cream, with a little more cushion. On oily skin that difference can be the line between comfortable and greasy; on dry or tight skin it can be the line between enough and not quite.
Which one for which skin
- Oily or acne-prone skin: CeraVe PM. It is the lighter of the two. If you prefer La Roche-Posay, the brand also sells a Toleriane Double Repair Matte version for oily skin.
- Combination skin: either. Choose CeraVe if your T-zone gets shiny, La Roche-Posay if your cheeks get tight.
- Normal to dry skin: La Roche-Posay. The cream texture and glycerin base give a little more comfort, though very dry skin may still need something richer.
- Sensitive or reactive skin: both are fragrance-free and built for this. La Roche-Posay positions Toleriane specifically for sensitive skin and is allergy tested, which makes it the slightly safer first try.
- A stripped or stinging barrier: either can be the moisturizer step, but the bigger fix is removing whatever caused the damage. Skin barrier basics and the skin barrier repair routine walk through it.

Frequently asked questions
Is CeraVe PM or Toleriane Double Repair better for sensitive skin?
Both are fragrance-free and designed with sensitive skin in mind. La Roche-Posay positions Toleriane specifically for sensitive skin and says it is allergy tested, so it is the slightly more cautious first choice. Patch test either one if your skin reacts easily.
Can I use Toleriane Double Repair in the morning?
Yes. It has no sunscreen, so use it under a separate sunscreen. La Roche-Posay also sells a Toleriane Double Repair moisturizer with SPF 30 if you prefer one step.
Is CeraVe PM lotion only for night?
No. CeraVe labels it PM, but it contains nothing that stops it working during the day. Pair it with a sunscreen in the morning.
Which one is better for oily skin?
CeraVe PM is the lighter of the two, so it usually suits oily skin better. La Roche-Posay also makes a Toleriane Double Repair Matte version aimed at oily skin.
Do more ceramides mean a better moisturizer?
Not necessarily. Three ceramide types sounds stronger than one, but there is no good evidence that the count alone makes a moisturizer work better for your barrier. The full formula, the texture and consistent daily use matter more.
