CeraVe AM vs PM Lotion: Can You Swap Them?

Same ceramide, niacinamide and hyaluronic acid base; only the AM adds SPF 30. When to swap them, when you need both, and when one bottle is enough.

Short answer: The two lotions share the same base: three ceramides, niacinamide and hyaluronic acid. The only real difference is that the AM version adds SPF 30 sunscreen filters. You can use the PM lotion in the morning if you add a separate sunscreen, but there is no point using the AM lotion at night. Most people need one bottle, not both.

The short version

CeraVe sells these as a pair, and the packaging makes it look as if your skin needs a different moisturizer for day and night. It does not. Both bottles carry the same skin-care core: ceramides NP, AP and EOP, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid and CeraVe's MVE slow-release technology. Both are oil-free, fragrance-free and non-comedogenic.

The AM lotion is the PM lotion's job plus a sunscreen. It adds broad-spectrum SPF 30 from a hybrid of chemical filters and zinc oxide. That is the whole difference that matters for choosing.

Can you swap them?

PM lotion in the morning: yes

Nothing in the PM lotion stops it working during the day. It is a light moisturizer with no sunscreen, so if you use it in the morning you simply need a separate sunscreen on top. Plenty of people do exactly this, because it lets them choose a sunscreen they actually like wearing. Sunscreen for beginners covers how to pick one.

AM lotion at night: no point

The AM lotion will not hurt you at night, but its sunscreen filters do nothing in the dark. You would be putting on ingredients with no job to do, and sunscreen filters near the eyes are a common reason for stinging. At night, use the PM lotion or any moisturizer without SPF.

Do you need both?

Usually not. There are really three sensible setups:

  1. PM lotion morning and night, plus a separate sunscreen. One moisturizer, one sunscreen, and you control the sun protection. This is the most flexible option.
  2. AM lotion in the morning, PM lotion at night. The routine CeraVe designed. It makes sense if you want a single step in the morning and will not use a separate sunscreen otherwise.
  3. AM lotion in the morning, a richer cream at night. For drier skin that finds the PM lotion too light by evening. The best night creams has options, and CeraVe Moisturizing Cream vs Lotion compares the richer CeraVe formats.

The catch with SPF in a moisturizer

An SPF number is measured with a fairly thick, even layer of product. Most people spread moisturizer much more thinly than that, so the protection you actually get from a moisturizer with SPF is often lower than the number on the bottle. If you rely on the AM lotion, be generous with it and cover your whole face and neck.

The AM lotion is also not water resistant, and CeraVe says to reapply every two hours. It is a sensible choice for ordinary days indoors and on the commute. For a day outdoors, at the beach or exercising, use a dedicated water-resistant sunscreen instead. SPF 30 vs SPF 50 explains when the higher number is worth it.

Which one for which skin

  • Oily or acne-prone skin: the PM lotion, used morning and night, under an oil-free sunscreen you like. The fewer layers, the better.
  • Normal to dry skin: the AM and PM pair works well. If the PM lotion feels too light at night, move to a cream.
  • Sensitive skin: start with the PM lotion only. If you then react to the AM lotion, the sunscreen filters are the likely difference, and a mineral sunscreen may suit you better.
  • Minimalists: the AM lotion in the morning is the one-bottle solution, as long as you apply enough of it.
  • Deeper skin tones: the AM lotion contains zinc oxide; CeraVe uses a microfine grade to reduce cast, but if any pale tinge shows, a separate clear sunscreen with the PM lotion is the fix.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use CeraVe PM lotion in the morning?

Yes. It is a lightweight moisturizer with no sunscreen, so it works in the morning as long as you apply a separate sunscreen over it.

Can I use CeraVe AM lotion at night?

You can, but there is no benefit. The SPF filters do nothing without daylight, and they are one more set of ingredients that could irritate around the eyes. Use the PM lotion or another moisturizer without SPF at night.

Is CeraVe AM lotion enough sunscreen on its own?

For an ordinary day mostly indoors, it can be, if you apply a generous layer and reapply when you are outside for long. It is not water resistant, so for outdoor, sporty or beach days a dedicated water-resistant sunscreen is the better choice.

What is the difference between CeraVe AM and PM lotion?

The AM lotion contains broad-spectrum SPF 30 sunscreen filters and the PM lotion does not. Both contain the same three ceramides, niacinamide and hyaluronic acid, and both are oil-free and fragrance-free.

Is CeraVe PM lotion good for oily skin?

It is one of the lighter moisturizers in the CeraVe range and is oil-free and non-comedogenic, so many people with oily skin use it morning and night. If your skin still feels greasy, use less, or apply it only where you feel tight.

Formulas and filter lists can change, so check the label on the bottle you buy, and treat real-world SPF from any moisturizer as lower than the number printed on it.
