The Ordinary vs Drunk Elephant: Is the Premium Worth It?
Both brands sell almost the same actives at opposite price tiers. Here is where Drunk Elephant's premium buys something real, and where it does not.
Short answer: For most actives, The Ordinary gets you the same core ingredient for a fraction of the price: L-ascorbic acid, glycolic acid, retinol, peptides, hyaluronic acid. Drunk Elephant's premium is justified mainly by formulation (blended acids, vitamin C with ferulic acid, nicer textures, fewer steps), not by stronger chemistry. For hydration and face oil, it is hard to justify.
Same actives, very different tiers
The Ordinary is Budget tier. Drunk Elephant is Premium. Line the two catalogs up and the overlap is striking: both sell a pure L-ascorbic acid vitamin C serum, a glycolic acid exfoliant, a retinol in a supportive base, a peptide product, a hyaluronic acid serum and a virgin marula face oil.
So the useful question is not "which brand is better". It is where does the extra money buy something real. The answer differs product by product, which is why this comparison works best as a swap list. Where the premium is justified
Vitamin C: partly
The Ordinary's Vitamin C Suspension 23% + HA Spheres 2% is water-free L-ascorbic acid suspended in an oil-like base. The brand itself says the texture is slightly granular and takes a few seconds to absorb, which is the most common reason people stop using it. Drunk Elephant's C-Firma pairs 15% L-ascorbic acid with 0.5% ferulic acid and 1% vitamin E at pH 2.5, and you mix it from two parts before first use so it starts fresh. The ferulic and vitamin E combination is a genuine formulation advantage, and a texture you will actually use beats a stronger one you abandon. Neither is gentle. Vitamin C for beginners covers which form to start with.
AHA exfoliant: partly
These are not equivalent. T.L.C. Framboos blends 10% AHA (glycolic, tartaric, lactic, citric) with 1% salicylic acid at pH 3.5, so it does more in one step. The Ordinary's 7% glycolic toner is simpler and milder, and for many people that is a feature: enough exfoliation for dullness without the jump to a blended night serum. Pay for Framboos if you want an AHA and a BHA in one product; otherwise the toner does the job. Glycolic acid vs lactic acid explains how the acids differ.

The Ordinary Glycolic Acid 7% Exfoliating Toner
A daily glycolic acid toner at 7%. Simpler and milder than a blended 10% AHA plus BHA serum, and enough exfoliation for many people.
Retinol: mostly texture
A-Passioni is sold at 1% retinol in a cream; The Ordinary's Retinol 1% in Squalane is the same percentage in a squalane base. Both sit at the top of the over-the-counter retinol range, so neither is a beginner product. The difference is vehicle and feel, not strength. If you have never used retinol, start with retinol for beginners rather than either 1% product.
Where the premium is hard to justify
Peptides
Protini is a peptide moisturizer; The Ordinary's Multi-Peptide + HA Serum is a peptide serum you put under any moisturizer. The pair still costs a fraction of Protini. You pay Drunk Elephant for a combined step and a nice gel-cream texture, not for access to peptides.
The Ordinary Multi-Peptide + HA Serum
A multi-peptide serum with hyaluronic acid. It is a serum, not a moisturizer, so it goes under one; even so, the pair costs a fraction of a premium peptide cream.
Hyaluronic acid and face oil
Hydrating serums are the clearest case. Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 and B-Hydra do the same basic job of drawing water into the upper layers of skin. Marula oil is similar: when a face oil is essentially one oil, the price gap buys packaging and brand. Check the ingredient list either way.
Which brand for which skin
Oily and acne-prone skin
The Ordinary. Its range includes the inexpensive single actives oily skin uses most, such as niacinamide and acids. Our The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% review covers the most popular one.
Dry skin
Drunk Elephant, if budget allows. Lala Retro combines three ceramides with five plant oils in a whipped cream. The Ordinary's Natural Moisturizing Factors + HA, which carries the National Eczema Association Seal of Acceptance, is the budget answer and is fine for most dry skin, just less rich.
Fragrance-reactive skin
Drunk Elephant is the simpler shop. Its core formulas are stated to be free of fragrance and essential oils, so you are not checking each label. That does not make its acidic serums gentle.
Beginners
Either, carefully. Drunk Elephant's products are complete formulas that are hard to misuse; The Ordinary's single ingredients are easy to over-layer. If you go with The Ordinary, The Ordinary vs Paula's Choice covers how to build a routine from it.
Frequently asked questions
Is The Ordinary as good as Drunk Elephant?
For the active ingredients, often yes: both sell L-ascorbic acid, glycolic acid, 1% retinol, peptides and hyaluronic acid. Drunk Elephant's advantage is formulation and texture, which matters most for vitamin C and blended exfoliants.
What is The Ordinary equivalent of Drunk Elephant C-Firma?
The closest is Vitamin C Suspension 23% + HA Spheres 2%, also pure L-ascorbic acid. It is higher strength but gritty, and it lacks C-Firma's ferulic acid and vitamin E pairing, so it is an equivalent in ingredient, not in feel.
Is Drunk Elephant Protini worth it?
Only if you value one combined step and its texture. The Ordinary's Multi-Peptide + HA Serum under a basic moisturizer covers the peptide side for much less.
Can you mix The Ordinary and Drunk Elephant?
Yes. Many people save on hydration with The Ordinary and keep one Drunk Elephant active they enjoy. Avoid stacking exfoliants or retinol with strong acids on the same night.

Matching percentages does not make two formulas identical, because the base, pH and packaging change how a product behaves on skin; treat the swap list as a starting point, not a guarantee.
